Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) considered this his most important work. It consists of five large movements (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei), but the movements are further divided according to the sections of the text, often into sharply contrasting parts, with the alternation of solo, quartet and choral parts, which are mostly sung, or together. This is what makes the internal structure of the Mass seem so complicated. The occasion for the composition was the inauguration of Beethoven's friend, student and patron, Archduke Rudolf, as archbishop of Olmütz

in 1820 . It is interesting, but sad for the Viennese, that the work was performed for the first time on April 6, 1824, in St. Petersburg. The Missa solemnis was originally intended by Beethoven for liturgical purposes, but the workwith his procrastination, he no longer cared about practical aspects, although he formally followed the traditions and rules of mass composition.

However, the strength and individualism of the work stretches all liturgical frameworks. He interprets inner peace more broadly, as a vision projected onto all of humanity. Just as in the Credo and in many of Beethoven's immortal late works, the fugue is once again the main weapon of victory. The final plea is repeatedly interrupted by the noise of battle, the sound of cauldrons, and the shrill sound of a trumpet. But the power and passion of the singing voices lead to victory, and the listener, just like the author struggling throughout the great work, can relax in the certainty of redemption.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) ezt tartotta legfontosabb művének. Öt nagy tételből áll (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei), de a tételek a szöveg szakaszainak nyomán tovább tagolódnak, gyakran élesen ellentétes karakterű részekké, a legtöbbször énekes szóló, kvartett és kórus részek váltakozásával, illetve együttes megszólalásával. Ez teszi a mise belső felépítését látszólag oly bonyolulttá.

A komponálás apropóját Beethoven barátjának, tanítványának és mecénásának, Rudolf főhercegnek 1820-as olmützi hercegérsekké avatása adta. Érdekes, de a bécsiekre nézve szomorú, hogy a mű először 1824. április 6-án, Szentpétervárott hangzott el. A Missa solemnist eredetileg ugyan liturgikus célra szánta Beethoven, de a munka elhúzódásával nem törődött már a praktikus szempontokkal, jóllehet formálisan követi a misekomponálás hagyományait és szabályait.

A mű ereje, individualizmusa azonban szétfeszít minden liturgikus keretet. A belső békét tágabban, az egész emberiségre vetített vízióként értelmezi. Éppúgy, mint a Credóban, illetve Beethoven számos halhatatlan kései alkotásában, ismét a fúga a győzelem fő fegyvere. A végső könyörgést többször is megszakítja a csata zaja, az üstdobok hangja, s a trombita hasító jelzése. De az énekszólamok ereje és szenvedélye győzelemre viszi a küzdelmet, s a hallgató, akárcsak a roppant művet végig küzdő szerző, megnyugodhat a megváltás bizonyosságában.
