Salomé, una giovane scugnizza, divide con Totò una vita di espedienti nella luce del sole di Napoli. A turbare l’equilibrio arrivano gli americani, ricchi e potenti, che tutto si possono permettere e comperare. Fra loro il Comandante Toby, con la figlia Gaby, corteggiata con scarso successo dall’attendente Francesco Sardela, detto Chic. Toby incontra Salomé e per lei prova una istintiva e sincera simpatia. La giovane è così invitata a frequentare più spesso la casa del Comandante e, dopo poco tempo, Toby matura la decisione di sposarla e portarsela in America. La zia della scugnizza vede la prospettiva della ricchezza e la incoraggia ad accettare. Ma accadrà che Totò, alla grande festa di fidanzamento rivelerà finalmente il suo amore per Salomé, mandando a monte le nozze già fissate con Toby. Succederà un pandemonio, ma l’amore vincerà, con qualche matrimonio a sorpresa.

Salomé, a young scugnizza, shares with Totò a life of expedients in the light of the Naples sun. To upset the balance come the Americans, rich and powerful, who can afford and buy everything. Among them Commander Toby, with his daughter Gaby, courted with little success by the attendant Francesco Sardela, known as Chic. Toby meets Salomé and feels an instinctive and sincere sympathy for her. The young woman is thus invited to frequent the Commander's house more often than her and, after a short time, Toby makes the decision to marry her and take her to America. The scugnizza's aunt sees the prospect of her wealth and encourages her to accept.
