Composer Alfred Schnittke’s music reflects the complexity, confusion and discord of the second half of the last century. His Viola Concerto, completed in 1985, encapsulates that pathos through the conflict between viola and orchestra, the stark contrast between fluid melodies and dissonance that ends in an elegiac finale. Tchaikovsky’s life also mirrored the tragedy that was the 19th century: his Symphony No.5 reflects the many struggles inherent in life. Listeners from different backgrounds and with different life experiences will find their own resonance in this work.

施尼特凯的音乐中反映着20世纪下半叶种种复杂、矛盾、不谐和的特性，他1985年完成的《中提琴协奏曲》悲剧性代表作，全曲以中提琴与乐队的强烈冲突为特征, 歌唱性旋律与不谐和的音响形成鲜明对比, 最后在哀悼、凄凉的悲伤中结束；柴科夫斯基的音乐不仅是个人悲怆人生的真实映照，同时也是19世纪整个时代悲剧的鲜明折射，《E小调第五交响曲》中刻画了人生中面对的种种挣扎，不同的人在不同的命运下，都有着不一样的遭遇，但都会在这首作品中获得共鸣。
