Dopo il trasferimento negli anni Stati Uniti nel 1939, Igor Stravinskij accarezzò l’idea di scrivere un’opera in inglese. Il progetto prese forma solo dopo alcuni anni quando nel 1947 il compositore rimase colpito dal ciclo di tele di William Hogarth esposte al Chicago Art Institute, che descrivevano l’ascesa e la caduta di Tom Rakewell, uno spendaccione che dilapida dissennatamente i propri averi e finisce i suoi giorni in manicomio. Stravinskij pensò subito di farne un’opera e si rivolse per la stesura del libretto al poeta britannico Wystan Hugh Auden a cui si affiancherà anche Chester Kallmann. Nel marzo del 1948 il libretto fu pronto, mentre per la musica Stravinskij si prese più tempo, concludendo la partitura solo tre anni dopo. The Rake’s Progress debuttò al Teatro La Fenice di Venezia l’11 settembre 1951 con lo stesso autore sul podio per la prima assoluta. Organizzata in arie, recitativi, cori e pezzi d’insieme in linea con lo schema teatrale settecentesco, l’opera mostra un carattere decisamente retrospettivo e rappresenta l’ultima tappa del periodo ‘neoclassico’ di Stravinskij. E se il modello di riferimento dichiarato è il teatro di Mozart e Da Ponte - in particolare il Così fan tutte - nel Rake’s Progress si affastellano numerose citazioni e rimandi a epoche e autori diversi, sottolineando ancora una volta la capacità di Stravinskij di assimilare in maniera organica ogni elemento della tradizione musicale.

After moving to the United States in 1939, Igor Stravinsky toyed with the idea of ​​writing an opera in English. The project took shape only after a few years when in 1947 the composer was struck by the cycle of canvases by William Hogarth exhibited at the Chicago Art Institute, which described the rise and fall of Tom Rakewell, a spendthrift who senselessly squanders his his days in the asylum. Stravinsky immediately thought of making it an opera and turned to the drafting of the libretto to the British poet Wystan Hugh Auden who will also be joined by Chester Kallmann. In March 1948 the libretto was ready, while Stravinsky took more time for the music, completing the score only three years later. The Rake's Progressdebuted at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on 11 September 1951 with the author himself on the podium for the world premiere. Organized in arias, recitatives, choruses and ensemble pieces in line with the eighteenth-century theatrical scheme, the work displays a decidedly retrospective character and represents the last stage of Stravinsky's 'neoclassical' period. And if the declared reference model is the theater of Mozart and Da Ponte - in particular the Cosi fan tutte - in Rake's Progress numerous quotations and references to different eras and authors are piled up, underlining once again Stravinsky's ability to assimilate in a organic every element of the musical tradition.
