1947. Recently settled in the United States, Stravinsky discovers a series of paintings dating from 1735 by William Hogarth. The English painter and engraver theatrically demonstrates the disorders to which alcohol and women can lead. Stravinsky entrusts the poet Wystan Hugh Auden with the task of writing a libretto supporting "neo-classical" music, that is to say, conscious of the past as well as the future.

The hero Tom abandons his faithful Anne Trulove to follow the diabolical Nick Shadow who makes him believe in the heritage of an unknown uncle. From brothels to vain pleasures, Tom is bored and his naivety goes so far as to make him believe in his idealistic dream of eradicating hunger in the world thanks to a marvelous bread machine. The harder the fall. A game of cards later, an alienated Tom falls asleep to the sound of Anne's lullaby returned or reinvented.

Carlos Wagner sees in the course of the libertine that of a poet who refuses the materialistic reality of life, in search of absolute freedom. The magnificent setting in which it turns in circles, in the shape of a wheel of Fortune, superbly symbolizes this cycle of the coincidences of time in which madness wins.

1947. Installé depuis peu aux États-Unis, Stravinski découvre une série de tableaux datant de 1735 due à William Hogarth. Le peintre et graveur anglais y démontre théâtralement les désordres auxquels peuvent conduire l’alcool et les femmes. Stravinski confie au poète Wystan Hugh Auden la tâche d’écrire un livret support d’une musique "néo-classique", c’est-à-dire consciente du passé comme de l’avenir.

Le héros Tom abandonne sa fidèle Anne Trulove pour suivre le diabolique Nick Shadow qui lui fait croire à l’héritage d’un oncle inconnu. De bordels en plaisirs vains, Tom s’ennuie et sa naïveté va jusqu’à lui faire croire en son rêve idéaliste de supprimer la faim dans le monde grâce à une merveilleuse machine à pains. Plus dure sera la chute. Une partie de cartes plus tard, Tom aliéné s’endort au son d’une berceuse d’Anne revenue ou réinventée.

Carlos Wagner voit dans le parcours du libertin celui d’un poète qui refuse la réalité matérialiste de la vie, en quête de liberté absolue. Le magnifique décor dans lequel il tourne en rond, en forme de roue de la Fortune, symbolise superbement ce cycle des hasards du temps dans lequel gagne la folie.
