Rom im Juni 1800. Die Republik wurde ­niedergeschlagen. Rom ist nun ein autoritärer Polizeistaat unter der Führung des Barons Scarpia. Politisch ­Andersdenkende ­haben nichts mehr zu lachen und werden verfolgt. Der ­Maler ­Mario Cavaradossi, Geliebter der berühmten Opernsängerin Floria Tosca, ist ein Gegner von Scarpias ­Regime. Weil er Cesare Angelotti, dem ehemaligen Konsul der ­römischen Republik, auf der Flucht hilft, wird er verhaftet, ­verhört und gefoltert. Scarpia hat dabei auch persönliche Motive, denn er begehrt Tosca selbst. Aufgrund ­seiner ­Intrige in der ­Kirche Sant ̓Andrea della Valle führt die ­eifersüchtige Diva die Verfolger ahnungslos auf die richtige Spur. In seinem Palast lässt Scarpia den Maler foltern und presst Tosca so das Geheimnis von Angelottis Aufenthaltsort ab. Als ­Cavaradossi zum Tode verurteilt wird und am nächsten Morgen auf der Engelsburg hingerichtet werden soll, stellt Scarpia die verzweifelte Tosca vor die furchtbare Wahl, sich ihm entweder hinzugeben oder aber andernfalls am Tod des Geliebten mitschuldig zu sein. Kann Scarpia über ­Tosca triumphieren oder sie über ihn?

Ein spannender Opernkrimi, ein Thriller und dank Puccinis leidenschaftlicher Musik eine der berühmtesten Opern überhaupt. Neben den beiden Cavaradossi-Arien hat sie vor allem einen Höhepunkt: Toscas Arie "Vissi d’arte, vissi d’amore" ("Ich lebte nur der Kunst und der Liebe").‎

Rome in June 1800. The Republic was crushed. Rome is now an authoritarian police state led by Baron Scarpia. Those who think differently politically have nothing to laugh about and are persecuted. The painter Mario Cavaradossi, lover of the famous opera singer Floria Tosca, is an opponent of Scarpia's regime. Because he helps Cesare Angelotti, the former consul of the Roman Republic, to escape, he is arrested, interrogated and tortured. Scarpia also has personal motives, because he desires Tosca himself. Due to his intrigue in the church of Sant ̓Andrea della Valle, the jealous diva unsuspectingly puts the pursuers on the right track. In his palace, Scarpia has the painter tortured and thus extorts the secret of Angelotti's whereabouts from Tosca. When Cavaradossi is sentenced to death and is about to be executed at Castel Sant'Angelo the next morning, Scarpia presents the desperate Tosca with the terrible choice of either surrendering to him or otherwise being complicit in the death of her lover. Can Scarpia triumph over Tosca or she over him?
