Tsjaikovski speelt de hoofdrol in dit concert met als gastdirigent Alexandre Bloch, al bijna tien jaar hét gezicht van het Orchestre National de Lille. Geliefd is zijn heftige en onstuimige Symfonie nr. 4. Het toont de worsteling in Tsjaikovski’s leven in de tijd dat het werk ontstond, maar ook de onverzettelijke kracht om er weer bovenop te komen. Hij voert je mee van de tragische fanfare aan het begin naar de hoogste jubel in de finale.

Clara-Jumi Kang
Tsjaikovski’s beroemde Vioolconcert staat op de lessenaar van elke grote violist. Ook op die van Clara-Jumi Kang, die ooit haar carrière echt begon als prijswinnaar van het prestigieuze Tsjaikovski-concours. Het concert begint met een opdrachtwerk van de Finse componiste Outi Tarkiainen. In The Rapids of Life beschrijft zij de geboorte van nieuw leven: de spanning, het gevecht, de pijn, maar ook de diepe vreugde bij het zien van de nieuwgeborene.
