ÀPékin, personne ne dort. La foule s'est rassemblée pour assister à la décapitation du Prince de Perse. Comme de nombreux étrangers avant lui, il n'a pas su répondre correctement aux trois énigmes qui lui auraient permis d'obtenir la main de la très convoitée Turandot, fille de l'empereur de Chine. « Blanche comme le jade, froide comme une lame », celle-ci a juré de rester libre à jamais pour venger la mémoire de son aïeule, assassinée par le prince des Tartares après l'invasion de son pays. Alors que les têtes continuent de tomber, l'arrivée d'un prince étranger en exil pourrait bien réchauffer le sang glacé de Turandot et redonner espoir à son peuple qui se languit du bonheur des jours passés.
En 1926, le compositeur Franco Alfano se voit confier la lourde tâche d'achever les deux dernières scènes de Turandot, laissées à l'état de simples notes par la mort de Puccini. Ces pages apocryphes sont arbitrairement retaillées par le chef Arturo Toscanini dès les premières représentations, privant l'œuvre d'un dernier envol magistral, pourtant voulu par Puccini, avec un développement triomphal du thème de « Nessun dorma », air parmi les plus connus du répertoire. Présenté ici sous sa forme complète, ce finale original permet de (re)découvrir Turandot sous un jour inédit. Un événement rare et grandiose, confié à la metteuse en scène Emmanuelle Bastet et au chef Domingo Hindoyan.

In Beijing, nobody sleeps. The crowds have gathered to watch the beheading of the Prince of Persia. Like many foreigners who came before him, the prince failed to answer the three riddles that would have earned him the hand of the much-coveted Princess Turandot, daughter of the Emperor of China. But she who is “white as jade, cold as blade” has sworn to never wed in vengeance for the death of her ancestress who was murdered by the Prince of Tartary after an invasion. As heads continue to roll, the arrival of an exiled foreign prince might melt Turandot’s ice-cold blood and restore hope in her people who yearn for the good old days.
In 1926, composer Franco Alfano was given the immense responsibility of completing the two final scenes of Turandot, which Puccini had left as a collection of sketches upon his death. These apocryphal pages were arbitrarily trimmed by the conductor Arturo Toscanini in the first performances, stripping the work of its sublime final soaring passage, against Puccini’s wishes, with the triumphant development of the theme of “Nessun Dorma”, which went on to become one of the best-known arias in the opera repertoire. Presented here in its complete version, this original finale is a chance to (re)discover Turandot in a fresh light. In the hands of director Emmanuelle Bastet and conductor Domingo Hindoyan, this is a rare and magnificent production.
