Maškarní ples Giuseppa Verdiho dokončený v roce 1858 je jeho v pořadí 23. operou z celkového počtu 28 a otevírá poslední šestici jeho vrcholných hudebních dramat. Námětem opery se stala, byť jen okrajově, historická událost – atentát na švédského krále Gustava III. v roce 1792. Nejedná se v žádném případě o operu ryze historicko-politickou. Hlavní osou je milostné vzplanutí krále Gustava III. k manželce jeho pobočníka. Spor zakázané lásky a odpovědnosti vůči nejbližšímu příteli i vladařským povinnostem vyústí přes sérii nedorozumění v tragický konec. Libreto nabídlo skladateli řadu kontrastních prostředí příběhu, kterou využil svými hudebně-dramatickými, divadelně působivými obrazy střídajícími intimní scény s velkým operním plátnem. Vražda skutečného krále Gustava III. se stala vzhledem k aktuální politické situaci v Evropě důvodem k cenzurním zásahům do díla. Nakonec byl děj přesazen ze Švédska do Ameriky. Z krále se stal bostonský guvernér, jména postav byla změněna na anglická a změnil se způsob provedení atentátu (ve Švédsku je král Gustav III. zavražděn pistolí, bostonský guvernér Richard nožem). Tak byla opera provedena při své světové premiéře v roce 1859 v Římě i v první sezóně Národního divadla moravskoslezského a tato verze zazní i ve sté prvé sezóně 2019/2020.

Masquerade Completed in 1858, Giuseppe Verdi is his 23rd opera out of a total of 28 and opens the last six of his top musical dramas. The subject of the opera became, even marginally, a historical event - the assassination of the Swedish king Gustav III. in 1792. This is by no means a purely historical-political opera. The main axis is the amorous outburst of King Gustav III. to his aide's wife. The conflict between forbidden love and responsibility towards one's closest friend and regent's duties leads to a tragic end through a series of misunderstandings. The libretto offered the composer a number of contrasting settings for the story, which he used with his musical-dramatic, theatrically impressive images alternating intimate scenes with the big opera screen. Murder of the real King Gustav III. has become, due to the current political situation in Europe, a reason for censorship of the work. Eventually, the plot was moved from Sweden to America. The king became the governor of Boston, the names of the characters were changed to English, and the method of assassination was changed (in Sweden, King Gustav III is murdered with a pistol, the governor of Boston, Richard, with a knife). This is how the opera was performed at its world premiere in 1859 in Rome and in the first season of the Moravian-Silesian National Theatre, and this version will also be heard in the hundred and first season 2019/2020.
