L’Américain Samuel Barber avait 29 ans lorsqu’il écrivit son Concerto pour violon en 1939. Comme l’Adagio pour cordes qui l’avait rendu célèbre l’année précédente, le Concerto est enraciné dans le romantisme européen, plutôt que dans la musique de son pays natal. Par l’entrée immédiate du soliste, le premier mouvement, plein de sérénité, rappelle le Concerto pour violon de Mendelssohn. Le mouvement central s’ouvre sur un beau solo de hautbois, comme l’Adagio du Concerto pour violon de Brahms. Le Finale est un véhément perpetuum mobile.
Stravinsky était lui aussi proche de la trentaine lorsque Diaghilev lui commanda L’Oiseau de feu. Combinant un conte de fées du 19e siècle et une fable populaire russe, le ballet relate comment un prince sauve une princesse, avec l’aide d’un oiseau de feu magique. Mélange d’exotisme et de style folklorique russe, la partition scintillante de Stravinsky devint son œuvre phare. Il tira par la suite du ballet trois suites de concert.

Samuel Barber was just 29 in 1939 when he wrote his Violin Concerto. Like the Adagio for Strings which had made him famous the previous year, the concerto sounds more rooted in European Romanticism than in the music of his native America, even down to its cloudless first movement emulating Mendelssohn’s violin concerto by introducing its soloist instantly, and its central movement opening on an exquisite extended oboe solo, as Brahms’s does. The finale is then an urgent perpetuum mobile. Stravinsky was also in his late twenties when, in 1909, Sergei Diaghilev commissioned the ballet, The Firebird. Combining a nineteenth century fairytale poem and a popular Russian fable, it tells of how a prince rescues a princess from an ogre, helped by a magical firebird – and Stravinsky’s glittering score became his breakthrough work, its blend of exoticism and Russian folk style so successful that he then worked three concert suites from it.
