Biografie: The tenor Angelos Samartzis was born in Athens and raised in Rhodes.
He studied singing and music theory at the Athenaeum Conservatory, as well as law at the University of Athens. He received his bachelor in opera singing from the Institute for Music Theater of the University of Music Karlsruhe, where he studied with Stephan Kohlenberg and Julia Varady. He continued his education as a Master’s student at the University of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin with Stephan Rügamer, Julia Varady and Peter Berne. He attended master classes under Raina Kabaivanska, Franco Farina, Jane Henschel, Cheryl Studer, Robert Dean Smith, Marlis Petersen, David L. Jones, Brian Zeger and Wolfram Rieger.
He has sung roles, such as Rodolfo (La bohème/G. Puccini), Gustavo/Riccardo (Un ballo in maschera/G. Verdi), Manrico (Il Trovatore/G. Verdi), Don Carlos(Don Carlos/G.Verdi), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly/G.Puccini), Don José (Carmen/G. Bizet), Faust (Faust/C. Gounod), Hoffmann (Les contes d’Hoffmann/J. Offenbach), Cavaradossi (Tosca/G. Puccini), Bacchus (Ariadne auf Naxos/R.Strauss), Ismaele (Nabucco/G. Verdi), Alfredo (La traviata/G. Verdi), Jason (Médée/L. Cherubini), Tony (West Side Story /L. Bernstein), Camille de Rossillon (Die lustige Witwe/F. Lehar), Javier Moreno (Luisa Fernanda /F. M. Torroba), Narraboth (Salome/R. Strauss), Chateauneuf (Zar und Zimmermann/A.Lortzing), Giraffier (Les deux aveugles), as well as the tenor parts in Beethoven’s 9th symphony and in Bruckner’s “Te deum”.
He has performed in theatres, such as the Greek National Opera, Saarland State Theatre (Saarländisches Staatstheater) , Brunswick State Theatre (Staatstheater Braunschweig), Halle Opera House (Oper Halle) , Wroclaw Opera, Music Theatre in the Ruhr (Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen), Kaiserslautern Opera House (Pfalztheater Kaiserslauten) , Nordhausen Theatre (Theater Nordhausen) and the Eutin Festival (Eutiner Festspiele). He has also appeared in concert venues such as the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Philharmonie Luxembourg and the Casa da Musica in Porto.
He has sung in concerts and opera galas with various orchestras, such as the Porto Symphony Orchestra, the Saarland State Orchestra, the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt, the Thuringian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vogtland Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra, the LOH Orchestra Sondershausen, the Solothurn State Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Opera at the Castle of Stettin and the Czestochowa Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.
In June 2016 he enjoyed a major success in the mega opera event “The Spanish Night with Carmen-Zarzuela Show”, a production of the Wroclaw Opera staged at the Stadion Miejski, watched by an international audience of around 30.000 people.
During the season 2016/2017, he was a member of the ensemble of the Theater Nordhausen.
In December 2017, he made his debut at the brand new opera house of the Greek National Opera (Stavros Niarchos Hall) as Rodolfo (Puccini, La bohéme), directed by Graham Vick.
Since August 2017 he is member of the ensemble of the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken.
