Biografie: León de la Guardia was born in Viña del Mar, Chile, and lives currently in Italy. He began his singing studies at the Conservatorio de Musica Isidor Handler in Viña del Mar. In his early years of study he decided to travel to Europe to pursue private lessons. Upon his arrival to Barcelona he joined the Cor Jove del Palau de la Musica Catalana and began with private lessons . He studied with various teachers, three of which have been fundamental for his career. They are: Jonas Kauffmann’s celebrated teacher Michael Rhodes in Trier, Antonio Carangelo and Laura Briolli, with whom he is currently perfecting his craft in Italy.
Throughout his musical education, he has obtained 3 scholarships that allowed him to take masterclasses with renowned opera singers such as Juan Oncina, Carlos Álvarez, Isabel Rey, Jaume Aragall, Gianni Maffeo, Angelo Loforese, Nicola Martinucci, Gianfranco Cécchele and Salvatore Fisichella.
Since his professional debut in Spain as Don Jose in Carmen, he has portrayed roles such as Rodolfo, Pinkerton and Luigi in Puccini’s La Boheme, Madame Butterfly and Tabarro. Ismael in Verdi’s Nabucco, Arvino in I lombardi, as well as Alfredo in La Traviata and Macduff in Macbeth. He has recently made his debut with Aeneas in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. De la Guardia has also performed sacred pieces such as Te Deum of Anton Bruckner, Misa Criolla of Ariel Ramirez and Verdi’s Requiem for the Pope in occasion of the closing ceremony of Jubileo in Rome, which was broadcast worldwide.
León de la Guardia has sung at renowned concert halls of all Europe such as the Rudolfinum in Prague, the Konzerthaus in Vienna , Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao, the Arena di Verona and the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Italy. In 2017 he made his northamerican debut with a concert at Sun Valley Opera and few months later, at Opera Kelowna, Canada, with the rol of Rodolfo from Puccini’s La Bohème.
Owner of a voice with a unique charisma, with beautiful dark shades and tremendously touching, León de la Guardia is a tenor characterized for his stage presence, expressiveness, interpretation and musicality.
