Opera Paris : A 'Boris' in search of a Boris

Jessye Norman had the stage all to herself as she opened the season of the Theatre du Chatelet as "the woman" in two one-acters about a woman in the process of losing her mind because she is losing her man. Schoenberg's "Erwartung" consists of the hysterical ravings of a woman stumbling through a forest in search of her lover, whom she finally finds shot to death by her rival.

The multimedia talent Heller brings Richard Strauss' "Rosenkavalier" to the stage in Berlin together with the conductor Zubin Mehta, who is in love with the beguiling sense of sound.

A more magnificent, more tasteful, more opulent "Rosenkavalier" has hardly ever been seen. André Heller, multimedia artist and full-time dream inventor, has set out to create an ideal setting for his debut as an opera director, with "sensuousness, beauty and accuracy", as he puts it, in which the full mastery of Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss can unfold could. The Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden is rolling out the red carpet for him: with a luxurious cast of singers and a budget that seems to set no limits to the exuberant fin-de-siècle fantasies of the visual artist Xenia Hausner and the fashion designer Arthur Arbesser
