"Soft stillness and the night / Become the touches of sweet harmony." Sweet harmonies fit the soft stillness of a summer night - William Shakespeare knew that and Ralph Vaughan Williams, who set the famous verses from Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice" to music in 1938, also knew it. The »Serenade to Music« was on the Magdeburg concert schedule when Karen Stone began as artistic director , and now this work for 16 singers and orchestra concludes the last symphony concert under her aegis.

Gustav Mahler also had a special sense of musical poetry. Friedrich Rückert's lines range from nocturnal fears to blissful oblivion and inspired Mahler with »I've lost the world« to what is perhaps his most beautiful song. But what would a musical summer night be without Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's incidental music for Shakespeare's most popular comedy, »A Midsummer Night's Dream«! It is not only in the magical overture that Mendelssohn captures the seductive and confusing atmosphere that makes summer nights unforgettable. A truly worthy conclusion and at the same time a hopeful outlook - not only for the coming summer ...
