It should come as no surprise that Aaron Hill, director of the Queen's Theater in London, wishing to introduce Italian opera to the English repertoire, chose an episode from the famous liberated Jerusalem as the subject of the first premiere . The brilliant epic of Torquat Tass combines historical themes (the story takes place during the First Crusade), the Christian ethos and the world of magic. Included in this context, captivating love and interestingly constructed characters make the text an excellent canvas for musical dramas. The artistry of the Renaissance work has already been appreciated by Claudio Monteverdi, devoting subsequent madrigals to selected themes. On the other hand, operas for librettos based on fragments of Tassa's poem were written by, among others, Giulio Caccini, Jean Baptiste Lully and of course Georg Friedrich Handel.
