How does flowing music sound? The 2nd Philharmonic Concert is dedicated to the musical aesthetics of the fin-de-siècle. Despite the specific title “La Mer”, Debussy does not compose an exact musical depiction of the sea in this popular orchestral piece, but describes an abstract, tonal impression of water movement, waves, ebb and flow. Debussy is also known for his setting of Maurice Maeterlinck's "Pelléas et Mélisande", but four years earlier Gabriel Fauré had also set his version of the story of the tragic lovers of Greek mythology to music. In New York in 1909, Rachmaninoff wrote the most soundtrack-like of his piano concertos: his third, which stands for the compositional style of the Russian virtuoso like no other.

Trotz des konkreten Titels „La Mer“ komponiert Debussy in diesem beliebten Orchesterstück keine genaue musikalische Abbildung des Meeres, sondern schildert eine abstrakte, in Tönen gefasste Impression von Wasserbewegungen, Wellen, Ebbe und Flut. Bekannt ist Debussy auch für seine Vertonung von Maurice Maeterlincks „Pelléas et Mélisande“, doch auch Gabriel Fauré hatte bereits vier Jahre zuvor seine Version der Geschichte des tragischen Liebespaars der griechischen Mythologie in Töne gefasst.
