Giuseppe Verdi: Requiem Mass Verdi had already laid the foundation for this large-scale composition in 1868, when he set the “Libera me” to music as part of a joint work in honor of the recently deceased Gioachino Rossini. The complete "Messa da Requiem" was created around this nucleus. The tender, almost enraptured beginning of the work increases in the course of the liturgical sequence to an apocalyptic descent into hell on the words of "Dies irae". It is all too easy to judge the whole work from that impressive early musical climax that seems to overshadow all the softer notes acoustically. But it is the entirety of the work that makes this requiem mass a deeply personal confession of Verdi.
