In der gebirgigen Kaukasusregion zwischen Asien und Europa gelegen, gehörte Armenien zu den frühesten christlichen Kulturen. Ursprünglich vor allem in der Region um den Berg Ararat angesiedelt, auf welchem die Arche Noah gelandet sein soll, wurden im 1. Weltkrieg auf Befehl der Regenten des Osmanischen Reiches über anderthalb Millionen Armenier teils ermordet, teils vertrieben. Die Sowjetunion wurde anschließend zur Schutzmacht dieses Volkes. Erst 1991 erlangte Armenien seine staatliche Unabhängigkeit wieder.

Die wechselvolle Geschichte Armeniens prägte auch das Schaffen seiner Komponisten. Edgar Hovhannisjan wurde in Jerewan und Moskau ausgebildet; 1962 ernannte man ihn zum Direktor der Staatsoper Jerewan. Seine farbenreiche Ballettmusik Marmar entstand 1957.

Vache Sharafyan gehört zu den bedeutendsten armenischen Komponisten der Gegenwart. Er studierte am Staatlichen Konservatorium der Landeshauptstadt. Danach war er bis 1996 Professor für Sakralmusik am Armenischen Theologischen Seminar Jerusalem. Bis heute unterrichtet Sharafyan Komposition am Konservatorium Jerewan. Eigens für dieses Konzert schreibt er ein Stück für das Nationalinstrument Duduk, ein oboenartiges Doppelrohrblattinstrument mit einem flötenähnlichen, weichen Klang.

Aram Khatschaturjan gilt als wichtigster armenischer Komponist, wobei das Land zu seinen Schaffenszeiten noch keine Unabhängigkeit besaß und er deshalb offiziell zu den führenden sowjetischen Komponisten zählte. Insbesondere durch seine Ballettmusiken Gayaneh (1942) und Spartakus (1954) und die Bühnenmusik zu Masquerade (1944) wurde er weltberühmt.

Located in the mountainous Caucasus region between Asia and Europe, Armenia was among the earliest Christian cultures. Originally located mainly in the region around Mount Ararat, on which Noah's Ark is said to have landed, more than one and a half million Armenians were partly murdered and partly expelled in World War I on the orders of the regents of the Ottoman Empire. The Soviet Union subsequently became the protecting power of this people. Armenia regained its independence in 1991.

The eventful history of Armenia also shaped the work of its composers. Edgar Hovhannisian was educated in Yerevan and Moscow; In 1962 he was appointed director of the Yerevan State Opera. His colorful ballet music Marmar was written in 1957.

Vache Sharafyan is one of the most important contemporary Armenian composers. He studied at the State Conservatory in the state capital. After that he was professor of sacred music at the Armenian Theological Seminary in Jerusalem until 1996. To this day, Sharafyan teaches composition at the Yerevan Conservatory. Especially for this concert he wrote a piece for the national instrument duduk, an oboe-like double-reed instrument with a flute-like, soft sound.

Aram Khachaturian is considered the most important Armenian composer, although the country did not have independence at the time of his creation and he was therefore officially one of the leading Soviet composers. He became world famous in particular for his ballet music Gayaneh (1942) and Spartacus (1954) and the incidental music for Masquerade (1944).
