The piece is a mystery game or staged ballad in another genre definition. The opera takes place in “Legendary Times” in the Bluebeard Castle, but that castle actually represents the soul of the man. A XX. At the beginning of the 19th century, a world-painful loneliness and depiction of life prevailed in European literature, fine arts and music. It was in this mood that Béla Balázs wrote his mystery play using the original French saying and supporting Hungarian folk ballad instruments. He first offered his textbook to Kodály, but in the end he started Bartók's imagination sooner, who had not yet figured out that violinist Stefi Geyer had scolded it. Bartók met the libretto in this bitter, solitary atmosphere, and by the time the piece was finished, he married his student, Márta Ziegler, and offered him one act. He also submitted it to the opera competition of the Lipótváros Casino, but it was rejected on the grounds that it could not be performed, so the performance took place only 7 years later, directed by Dezső Zádor. The sets of the premiere were designed by Miklós Bánffy, the two main roles were sung by Oszkár Kálmán and Olga Haselbeck, the conductor was Egisto Tango, and the lyricist was told by Imre Palló! After eight performances, the piece was taken off the show, but it was played again from 1936, with great success, when it set out for international fame. Bartók's music, as well as Béla Balázs's lyrics, are based on ballad-folk music, the prose music of the lyrics follows and amplifies the melodies. The Bluebeard's speeches are slower, Judith's more lively, nervous reclamations.
