Sie untersuchen, üben, erforschen, sezieren Worte und Phrasen, bauen sie um und geben ihnen neue Bedeutungen. Es wird gesprochen, geflüstert, gestottert, geliebt, gelehrt, gelacht. Eine Art Madrigal taucht auf. Später werden barocke Koloraturen exerziert. Es geht um die ganz großen Fragen, die gleichzeitig das Stück gliedern: Was war am Anfang, wo ist die Mitte, was ist das Ende, dennoch ist der Diskurs alles andere als sachlich. Die Musik von Gesualdo, Vecchi, Gabrieli, Monteverdi und Zeitgenossen wird verschränkt mit A-Ronne von Luciano Berio und schlägt eine Brücke von der frühen Blütezeit des Ensemblegesangs bis in die Gegenwart.
