Giuseppe Verdi was at the height of his world fame when, in 1870, the Egyptian viceroy asked him to write an opera for the inauguration of the Suez Canal. The prospect of compositional freedom and a hefty fee finally convinced the initially skeptical Verdi to compose the opera "Aida". He masterfully combined spectacular mass performances in the style of the then popular French Grand Opera with touchingly intimate, almost chamber music scenes of a dramatic love tragedy. The focus is on Egypt's war against its neighbor Ethiopia. After a victorious campaign, the Ethiopian princess Aida is kidnapped to the Egyptian court and has to serve as a slave to the pharaoh's daughter Amneris. Despite the enmity of their people, Aida falls in love with the Egyptian general Radames, who is actually promised to Amneris. Radames decides for his love for Aida and against the fatherland. He wants to flee with her and tells her father important war plans. The jealous Amneris uncovers everything, whereupon Radames is sentenced to death. Aida voluntarily follows him to his death. Verdi's third to last and still one of his most popular operas contains a fine musical psychograph of his three main characters against the broad backdrop of war. The love between Aida and Radames remains a utopia of the possibility of overcoming dividing borders and cultures. He wants to flee with her and tells her father important war plans. The jealous Amneris uncovers everything, whereupon Radames is sentenced to death. Aida voluntarily follows him to his death.
