Ethiopia and Egypt are at war. The Egyptian general Radamès loves the Ethiopian king's daughter Aida, who is enslaved by his people - and she loves him. But the Egyptian king's daughter Amneris also loves the general - jealous and ruthless. Ironically, by defeating Aida's people, Radamès hopes to be able to demand the freedom of his beloved from his king. In the wheelwork of religious and political intrigues as well as Amneris' desperate lust for revenge, the lovers find themselves hopelessly caught between all fronts. Buried alive, Aida and Radamès, escaping reality, sing of their unquenchable love. In the style of grand opera and bel canto, a psychological chamber play develops in an imaginary Egyptian empire.
