Director Roger Vontobel sees the story of the beautiful slave girl, who longs for the love of the war leader in times of war against her own people, as a timeless parable about the friction between individual needs and social necessities. Enemies and friends wear changing masks here, between rite, community, excess and violence there is no power that could clear the chaos. Aida's tragedy is taking place not only in exotically distant Egypt, but all over the world, and so it cannot be a coincidence that the work was banned by Mussolini during the fascist wars of aggression against Abyssinia.
