Pour les compositrices, l’accession à la scène a été difficile durant tout le XIXe siècle : Fausto de Louise Bertin (Théâtre-Italien, 1831) et Mazeppa de Clémence de Grandval (Opéra de Bordeaux, 1892) font exception. Afin d’aborder l’art lyrique, Pauline Viardot propose, pour sa part, un opéra de salon (Le Dernier Sorcier, 1867).

It will come as no surprise that alongside pages by Rossini, Berlioz and Gluck, Debora Waldman has chosen to let us hear arias composed by Louise Bertin and Pauline Viardot. Trained at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and having started her career as Kurt Masur's assistant at the Orchester National de France, this conductor was the first woman to lead a nationally-labelled formation, in 2020. Particularly committed in transmission, she takes a close interest in little-known or even unknown works by female composers. In 2019, she thus created Charlotte Sohy's "Great War" Symphony , of which she had found the score: the story is told in The Forgotten Symphony, a book co-written with journalist Pauline Sommelet. Place this time to two composers of the 19th century: Louise Bertin, who collaborated in particular with Victor Hugo (no less!), and Pauline Viardot, best known as a singer.
