Schon bei seiner Uraufführung 1735 feierte das Werk über die verführerische Zauberin gleichen Namens Triumphe. Bis heute bietet es Operngöttinnen wie Magdalena Kožená Gelegenheit, in der Titelrolle zu glänzen.

Für meisterhaften Händel-Sound im Hintergrund sorgt dabei niemand Geringerer als Marc Minkowski, Frankreichs altgedienter Spezialist für historisch informierte Aufführungspraxis. Mit seinen Musiciens du Louvre hat der temperamentvolle Dirigent schon so manchem bekannten Werk faszinierende neue Facetten abgerungen.

Stimmliche Faszination verbreiten auch die Italienerin Anna Bonitatibus als dem Liebeszauber verfallener Ritter Ruggiero sowie die Amerikanerin Erin Morley, die Alcinas flatterhaften Schwester Morgana ihren spritzigen Koloratursopran leiht. Komplettiert wird das Damen-Trio durch die Mezzosopranistin Elizabeth DeShong in der Rolle von Ruggieros verkleideter Braut Bradamante. Händel wäre entzückt.

Handel connoisseurs agree: Among the 42 operas by "caro Sassone" (the energetic Saxon's Italian nickname), "Alcina" is one of the most beautiful, entertaining and musically rich. Already at its premiere in 1735 the work about the seductive sorceress of the same name celebrated triumphs. To this day, it offers opera goddesses like Magdalena Kožená the opportunity to shine in the title role.

None other than Marc Minkowski, France's long-serving specialist for historically informed performance practice, ensures masterful Handel sound in the background. With his Musiciens du Louvre, the spirited conductor has wrested fascinating new facets from many a well-known work.

Vocal fascination is also spread by the Italian Anna Bonitatibus as the knight Ruggiero who has fallen under the spell of love, and the American Erin Morley, who lends Alcina's fickle sister Morgana her sparkling coloratura soprano. The women's trio is completed by mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong in the role of Bradamante, Ruggiero's bride in disguise. Handel would be delighted.
