An opera in four scenes from 1896, libretto by Luigi Illica (1857–1919)

The story of Umberto Giordano's most famous opera tells about the romantic love of the young noblewoman Maddalena and the progressive poet André Chénier, who, under the influence of intrigues and false accusations, find themselves in the fatal wheel of the French Revolution. Chénier, who is a real historical figure (he died under the guillotine in 1794 at the age of 32), was sensitive to the necessity of social change and the unsustainability of the privileges of the aristocracy, but he could not identify with the distorted morality of the savage mob that was searching everywhere for an enemy.
 
With this title, we follow up on the release of Giordano  's Fedora operas in 2011.

Opera o čtyřech obrazech z roku 1896, libreto Luigi Illica (1857–1919)

Příběh nejslavnější opery Umberta Giordana vypráví o romantické lásce mladé šlechtičny Maddaleny a pokrokového básníka Andrého Chéniera, kteří se pod vlivem intrik a křivých obvinění ocitnou v osudném soukolí francouzské revoluce. Chénier, který je skutečnou historickou postavou (zemřel pod gilotinou v roce 1794 ve věku 32 let), citlivě vnímal nutnost společenské proměny a neudržitelnost privilegií aristokracie, nemohl se však ztotožnit s pokřivenou morálkou zdivočelé lůzy, která všude bezhlavě hledala nepřítele.
 
Tímto titulem navazujeme na uvedení Giordanovy oper Fedora v roce 2011.
