The author of eleven operas, choral works, chamber-vocal and piano compositions, Umberto Giordano (1867-1948) truly inscribed his name in the history of music with only one masterpiece that had a resounding success - the opera André Chenier. In this sense, his composer's fate is similar to the fate of fellow verists Ruggero Leoncavallo and Pietro Mascagni. The libretto by Luigi Illica is dedicated to the last years of the life of the outstanding poet of the era of the French Revolution, Andre Chenier (although, of course, there is no question of historical accuracy in the opera). The themes of the Revolution, love and jealousy, honor and dishonor, servants and masters - all this is reflected in the wonderful music of Giordano. Stunning arias, especially Chenier's "Improvisation", are indispensable in the repertoire of leading singers. Fabio Manstrangelo, conductor: “As a conductor, I like André Chénier primarily because of the complexity of the score. This opera is very long, varied, like all operas of verismo.
