Shostakóvich disfrutó del reconocimiento oficial soviético en la misma medida en que fue objeto de durísimas reprimendas que le hicieron temer por su propia vida. Todo ello, al compás de un régimen que ejerció su coerción haciendo uso de distintos grados de violencia y que adoptó posturas estéticas mutantes en el tiempo. Del mismo modo, su música se posicionó con respecto al estalinismo como sátira –Lady Macbeth de Mtsensk (1934)–, como modelo estético –Sinfonía no5 (1937)–, como arma propagandística –La caí-da de Berlín (1950)– y como denuncia de su miseria moral –Babi Yar (1962).

Anti-formalist Rayok (traducible como El pequeño paraíso formalista) es, seguramente, la obra menos ambigua de todas: se trata de una pequeña ópera de cámara compuesta en 1948 y representada de forma clandestina solo ante familiares y amigos. Planteada como una sucesión de verborreicos discursos en una supuesta conferencia de las máximas autoridades culturales soviéticas, enhebra las melodías folclóricas Kalinka y Sulikó –esta última, la favorita del genocida Stalin– en un discurso musical con un claro sustrato bufo. Esta pequeña y divertida joya musical se presentará, como complemento a La nariz, en el Círculo de Bellas Artes.

Shostakovich enjoyed official Soviet recognition to the same extent that he was subjected to harsh reprimands that made him fear for his own life. All of this, to the beat of a regime that he coerced using different degrees of violence and that he adopted aesthetic postures that changed over time. In the same way, his music was positioned with respect to Stalinism as satire –Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (1934)–, as an aesthetic model –Symphony No. 5 (1937)–, as a propaganda weapon –The fall of Berlin (1950)– and as a denunciation of their moral misery –Babi Yar (1962).

Anti-formalist Rayok (translatable as The Little Formalist Paradise) is surely the least ambiguous work of all: it is a small chamber opera composed in 1948 and clandestinely performed only before family and friends. Presented as a succession of verbose speeches at a supposed conference of the highest Soviet cultural authorities, it threads the folk melodies Kalinka and Sulikó –the latter, the favorite of the genocidal Stalin– in a musical discourse with a clear buffo substratum. This little and fun musical jewel will be presented, as a complement to La nose, at the Círculo de Bellas Artes.
