Egykor Végh Sándor tanítványa volt, és a norvég hegedűművész-karmester, Arvid Engegård pályafutása legfontosabb döntésének ítéli, hogy látogatta a nagy magyar muzsikus salzburgi kurzusait. A számos közös koncert után most újra a Concerto Budapestet vezénylő Engegård műsora ezúttal a német romantikát Stravinsky zenéjével társítja, méghozzá úgy, hogy a felhangzó művek itt-ott más korokat és világokat is megidéznek majd.

Kezdve mindjárt az elsőként megszólaló 1873-as Brahms-művel, amely címe szerint egy Haydn-téma variációit tartalmazza, ám a nyolc változaton és a finálén végigvonuló koráldallam ennél is korábbról eredeztethető. A kürt 19. századi versenymű-irodalma nem mérhető a hegedű vagy a zongora kedveltségéhez, ám Robert Schumann éppenséggel szólóhangszerként is szívesen nyúlt ehhez az instrumentumhoz, s ennek legszebb bizonysága az az 1849-es kompozíció, amely nem is egy, hanem mindjárt négy kiváló kürtös számára kínál főszerepet. „Régi munkám a Petruska. Nem mondom, hogy rossz munka. De már túl vagyok rajta.” 1926-ban nyilatkozott így Budapesten Igor Stravinsky, aki szerette meghökkenteni az újságírókat. Valójában még évtizedek múltán is visszatért e művéhez, mi pedig sose leszünk túl a Petruskán.

A former student of Sándor Végh‘s, the Norwegian violinist and conductor Arvid Engegård looks back at attending the great Hungarian musician‘s courses in Salzburg as the most important decision he made in his career. After performing with Concerto Budapest many times, Engegård is now returning to conduct them in a programme that couples German Romanticism with the music of Stravinsky, with works that also occasionally evoke other eras and worlds.

This pattern kicks off with Brahms's work from 1873, which, as its title suggests, develops variations on a theme by Haydn. However, the chorale melody running through the eight variations and the finale can be traced back to even earlier. While the 19th-century literature of concertos written for the horn cannot be compared to the popularity of that of the violin or piano, Robert Schumann was fond of employing it as a solo instrument, and the most beautiful proof of this fact is his composition from 1849, which offered a leading role not only to one excellent horn player, but four of them. "Petrushka is an old work of mine. I wouldn't say it turned out poorly. But now I'm finished with it.” So said Stravinsky in 1926, who always enjoyed surprising journalists, in Budapest in 1926. In fact, he did indeed return to this work decades later. For our part, we will never be finished with Petruska.
