Après avoir exploré les périodes d’Arnstadt, Muhlhausen et Weimar, Paul Agnew poursuit son cycle de concerts « Bach, une vie en musique » en abordant une nouvelle étape de la vie du compositeur : ses cinq années à Köthen.

En 1717, Johann Sebastian Bach accède au poste de Kapellmeister à la cour du prince Léopold d’Anhalt-Köthen. Brillant musicien, ce dernier nourrit l’ambition de contribuer au déploiement d’une musique profane allemande en faisant de sa cour un foyer musical de premier ordre. Les circonstances l’y aident, lorsque le nouveau monarque prussien Frédéric-Guillaume Ier, peu intéressé par les arts, licencie les artistes de la cour de Berlin. Leopold s’empresse alors d’attirer ces excellents musiciens rendus subitement disponibles, et Köthen dispose rapidement d’un ensemble instrumental de très haut niveau.

Ce contexte constitue un terreau fertile pour Bach. Grâce à la qualité des musiciens mis à sa disposition et au tempérament libéral du prince, il compose à Köthen un grand nombre d’œuvres instrumentales de formes variées, dont ce programme, principalement instrumental, offre un condensé.

Du concerto italien à deux violons à l'ouverture à la française, en passant par le concerto grosso, Paul Agnew propose ici un panorama de tous les genres instrumentaux abordés par Bach à Köthen. S’y ajoute aussi la seule cantate qui nous soit parvenue de cette période, la Serenata « Durchlauchtster Leopold » donnée en 1722 en l’honneur du vingt-huitième anniversaire du prince… dont la voix soprano n’est pas sans évoquer celle de la deuxième épouse de Bach, la prima donna Anna Magdalena Wilcke, qu’il épouse la même année.

Et pour clore le concert en beauté, le public musicien de la Philharmonie de Paris sera exceptionnellement invité à rejoindre l’orchestre des Arts Florissants pour un bis participatif !

After having explored the periods of Arnstadt, Muhlhausen and Weimar, Paul Agnew continues his concert series "Bach, a life in music" by exploring another chapter in the life of the composer: his five years in Köthen.

In 1717, Johann Sebastian Bach became Kapellmeister at the court of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen. A brilliant musician, he had the ambition to contribute to the development of German secular music by making his court a first-class center for music. Circumstances helped him when the new Prussian monarch Frederick William I, who had little interest in the arts, dismissed the artists of the Berlin court. Leopold wasted no time in attracting the excellent musicians who had suddenly become available, and Köthen soon had an instrumental ensemble of a very high standard. 

This context was a fertile ground for Bach. Thanks to the quality of the musicians at his disposal and to the liberal nature of the prince, he composed a large number of varied instrumental works in Köthen, of which this program, mainly instrumental, offers a summary.

From Italian concerto for two violins to French overture and concerto grosso, Paul Agnew offers here a panorama of all the instrumental genres that Bach approached in Köthen. He also adds the only surviving cantata from this period, the Serenata "Durchlauchtster Leopold", given in 1722 in honor of the prince's 28th birthday... whose soprano voice is reminiscent of that of Bach's second wife, the prima donna Anna Magdalena Wilcke, whom he married the same year.

And to close the concert in beauty, the musicians in the audience of the Philharmonie de Paris will be exceptionally invited to join the Les Arts Florissants orchestra for an encore!
