ピエタ慈善院は、14世紀の設立されたヴェネチア共和国の孤児院で、子供たちに音楽教育を施して演奏会の収入により運営を支えてきた。
18世紀以降、優れた音楽家が指導に当たるようになり、特にアントニオ・ヴィヴァルディが音楽監督の時代に飛躍的に発展した。彼自身がここでの教育のために多くの作品を残しているが、それらは音楽的に優れた水準を示し、加えて子供たちに名人芸を発揮するために高度な技巧を要する音楽となっている。
今回のプログラムは、ヴィヴァルディがピエタ慈善院のために作曲した作品の中から、声楽。器楽の両面にわたってその成果を示すものを集めて構成された。作品としても演奏技術の上からも非常に興味深いものである。
