Laughter or contemplation? That is the question during this concert. In George Frideric Handel’s oratorio L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato, three temperaments – the cheerful, the thoughtful and the moderate – discuss which attitude is better. One thing is already certain: the cheerful naturally prevails at the end. The philosophical libretto gave the composer a text suitable for setting off a fireworks of musical emotions. The favourite number in Handel’s day was the laughing aria Haste thee, Nymph. Conductor William Christie is one of the stars of the early music scene
