Lars von Trier caused a sensation in 1996 with his award-winning film Breaking the Waves. In it, he tells the story of a deeply religious, traumatized, young woman in an impossible situation: Out of love for her paraplegic husband Jan, Bess meets his monstrous demand and sleeps with other men – believing that she will save her husband with it. Twenty years after the film, the opera version of the material was successfully premiered in Philadelphia. With a highly emotional tonal language and sensual sounds, the American composer and Grammy winner Missy Mazzoli paints the multifaceted portrait of a naïve anti-heroine who, out of selflessness, becomes the victim of an isolated, dysfunctional society. With Breaking the Waves, British director and choreographer Melly Still, who has been nominated several times for a Tony and Olivier Award for her work, makes her debut on the European mainland. Chief conductor Modestas Pitrenas conducts the St.Gallen Symphony Orchestra in the opening production by opera director Jan Henric Bogen.
