The cantata "Carmina Burana" (1936) is the most famous work of Karl Orff, which brought its author worldwide fame and, among the few musical masterpieces of the 20th century, immediately found itself in the golden fund of the popular classical repertoire. In the early 1930s, the composer got acquainted with the collection of the XII-XIII centuries "Karmina Burana" ("Boyern songs"), found in one of the Bavarian monasteries. It contained the works of the Vagants, itinerant medieval poets: students, scholars, fugitive monks. These poems, composed in colloquial dialects - folk Latin, Middle High German and Old French, show that in that distant era, the interests of people differed little from modern ones: wine, women, gambling, luck and wealth ... But the main idea of ​​all literary diversity was that that there is nothing eternal in the world and a person with all his little joys and sorrows is just a toy in the hands of a capricious fate, the symbol of the impermanence of which is the spinning wheel of Fortune. It was this image that became the leitmotif of Orff's cantata.
In an effort to resurrect the "primordial foundations" of music, the composer used only the simplest expressive means - clear, concise melodic formulas and harmony, reduced to its key elements. The main secret of the composition's success was Orff's appeal to the primitive magic of powerful, bewitching rhythms, embodied not only with the help of a huge composition of percussion instruments, but also due to a clear, chanted presentation of a poetic text. Кантата «Кармина Бурана» (1936) – самое известное сочинение Карла Орфа, принесшее своему автору всемирную славу и в числе немногих музыкальных шедевров ХХ века сразу же оказавшееся в золотом фонде популярного классического репертуара. В начале 1930-х годов композитор познакомился со сборником XII–XIII столетий «Кармина Бурана» («Бойернские песни»), найденным в одном из баварских монастырей. В нем были произведения вагантов, странствующих средневековых поэтов: студентов, школяров, беглых монахов. Эти стихи, сочинявшиеся на разговорных наречиях – народной латыни, средневерхненемецком и старофранцузском, показывают, что в ту далекую эпоху интересы людей мало отличались от современных: вино, женщины, азартные игры, удача и богатство… Но главной идеей всего литературного многообразия было то, что в мире нет ничего вечного и человек со всеми своими маленькими радостями и печалями – лишь игрушка в руках капризной судьбы, символом непостоянства которой является вращающееся колесо Фортуны. Именно этот образ стал лейтмотивом кантаты Орфа.
Стремясь воскресить «праосновы» музыки, композитор использовал лишь самые простые выразительные средства – ясные, лаконичные мелодические формулы и гармонию, сведенную к своим ключевым элементам. Главным же секретом успеха сочинения стало обращение Орфа к первобытной магии мощных, завораживающих ритмов, воплощаемых не только с помощью огромного состава ударных инструментов, но и за счет четкой, скандированной подачи поэтического текста.
