Since time immemorial, 12 has been seen as a mythical symbol. 12 months in a year, two times 12 hours in a day, 12 disciples in the New Testament, 12 semitones in an octave, 12 stars on the European Union flag… it is a number than represents perfect harmony.

A 12-strong ensemble comprising identical sound sources is, however, no guarantee of success per se. What is important is the instrument itself, and as Yehudi Menuhin graciously acknowledged, the cello awakens «our feelings in a deep, unfathomable way». It is a captivating instrument, with a huge lyrical quality of tone and a colourfulness of sound, from soft lows to shrill, menacing highs, forming the broadest of sound spectrums.

The way the instrument is played is also very special – the musician almost has to embrace it, making it seemingly impossible not to love the cello! This incredibly versatile instrument, multiplied by 12, promises a sound format capable of carrying an entire orchestra.

The chosen works for this performance are just as exciting, with original compositions such as Julius Klengel’s «Hymnus» and Arvo Pärt’s Fratres alongside Richard Wagner’s «Liebestod» and Maurice Ravel’s «Bolero».

Die Zahl 12 gilt seit Urzeiten als mythisches Symbol. Seien es zwölf Monate, zwölf Stunden, die verdoppelt einen Tag ergeben, seien es die zwölf Apostel im Neuen Testament oder die zwölf Halbtöne einer reinen Oktave, die zwölf Sterne in der Flagge der Europäischen Union: Diese Zahl bedeutet vollkommene Harmonie.

Ein zwölf-köpfiges Ensemble, das aus identischen Klangquellen besteht, ist per se aber kein Garant auf Erfolg. Wesentlich ist auch das Instrument selbst: Yehudi Menuhin anerkannte neidlos, dass das Cello «auf tiefer, unergründlicher Ebene an unser Gefühl» anrührt. Das Instrument besticht mit einer grossen lyrischen Qualität des Tons und einer Farbigkeit des Klangs von sanfter Tiefe bis hin zu bedrohlich schriller Höhe und bildet so ein weites Klangspektrum ab.

Auch die Spielweise an sich ist speziell, denn es wird beim Spielen quasi umarmt – es ist unmöglich, das Cello nicht zu lieben! Dieses unglaublich vielseitige Instrument , vervielfacht mit 12, verspricht ein Klangformat, das es mit einem ganzen Orchester aufnehmen kann. Gespannt darf man auch auf die gespielten Werke sein. Originalkompositionen wie Julius Klengels «Hymnus» oder Arvo Pärts Fratres gesellen sich zu Richard Wagners «Liebestod» oder Maurice Ravels «Boléro».
