Following last year's well-received celebratory events of Verdi's bicentennial featuring works from his operatic output, tonight we are thrilled to present his masterpiece, the Requiem. Written during an almost totally fallow period of fifteen years between Aida and Otello, the Requiem was composed in memory of the writer and humanist Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873) who was regarded by Italians, especially the Milanese, as the central figure of Italian culture and literature of the 19th century. Less well known is the fact that Verdi had earlier initiated a collaborative composers' project – later abandoned – to honour his fellow opera composer Rossini with a requiem to be played on the anniversary of Rossini's death. Verdi's own contribution to the "requiem for Rossini" was the Libera Me section from the Requiem we now know. It has been pointed out that, like Brahms's Ein Deutsches Requiem, Verdi's Requiem is a deeply religious work written by a great sceptic.  
Though it is Verdi's only large-scale work not intended for the stage, the Requiem is absolutely theatrical in style, with passages of great tenderness and simplicity contrasting with intensely dramatic sections, culminating with the terrifying "Dies Irae". We are deeply honoured to be led by Maestro Myung-Whun Chung in this performance, who has conducted virtually all of the world's greatest orchestras, and whose extensive work with the Italian repertoire, especially with Verdi's music, has received wide acclaim. Among many other awards he has garnered are the Italian Premio Abbiati and the Arturo Toscanini prize in Italy, in recognition of his service to Italian music and culture.
