Concert 10: Resurrection: 2. Sinfonie Mahler

The first antecedents of what would become Gustav Mahler 's Symphony No. 2 date back to 1888, when the composer worked on what he then conceived as a tone poem entitled Funeral Rites . Then, in 1893, he added another three movements to this work, reserving these four sections for later revision.

Mahler only glimpsed the final form of the Second after he heard a musical version of Friedrich Klopstock 's ode Resurrection in 1894. Thus, the composer devoted himself to a personal musicalization of this poem, which became the final chorale of what was renamed Symphony No. 2 'Resurrection'. This monumental, bombastic and expansive symphonic-choral creation has a program that reflects on God, life, death and transcendence.
