« Il n'y a personne d'autre pour dire, pour vivre Schubert comme Matthias Goerne aujourd'hui. » C’est ainsi que l’Express a salué l’interprétation des trois cycles de Lieder de Schubert par Matthias Goerne au Festival de Salzbourg en août 2010. Timbre de velours mat, étonnant de mobilité jusque dans ses profondeurs, le baryton allemand incarne à lui seul l’art du Lied. En 2008, il entamait chez Harmonia Mundi une édition Schubert dont chaque volume a la particularité d’être accompagné par un pianiste différent. C’est Christoph Eschenbach, sous la direction duquel il a notamment interprété Mathis der Maler de Hindemith à l’Opéra Bastille, que Matthias Goerne a choisi pour remettre sur le métier La Belle Meunière, premier volet d’un cycle qui se poursuivra sur l’ensemble de la saison
