At the beginning of the 17th century, the myth of Daphne provided the German Monteverdi, Heinrich Schütz, with the material for a pastoral. Created in 1627, its Dafnemarks a milestone in the history of German opera. Unfortunately, the score is destroyed and only the libretto by Martin Opitz has come down to us. Reading it gave Geoffroy Jourdain the desire to follow in the footsteps of Apollo. Because the race of the god defeated by Cupid, seeking in vain to reach the object of his desire is sometimes like the artistic quest. The founder and director of the Cris de Paris invited Wolfgang Mitterer to recreate from the words of Martin Opitz a work where the roles seem to arise from the choral mass before plunging back into it, where electronics blur the boundaries between song and pure vibration. material. On sait que la couronne de lauriers est la distinction du poète victorieux. Elle est aussi un trophée de chasse et un emblème mortuaire, commémorant le souvenir d’une passion fatale: celle qui lança Apollon sur les pas de la nymphe Daphné, métamorphosée en arbre avant de se laisser atteindre...

Au début du xviie siècle, le mythe de Daphné fournit au Monteverdi allemand, Heinrich Schütz, la matière d’une pastorale. Créée en 1627, sa Dafne marque une date essentielle dans l’histoire de l’opéra allemand. Malheureusement, la partition est détruite et seul le livret de Martin Opitz est parvenu jusqu’à nous. Sa lecture a donné à Geoffroy Jourdain l’envie de suivre à son tour les traces d’Apollon. Car la course du dieu vaincu par Cupidon, cherchant en vain à rejoindre l’objet de son désir est parfois à l’image de la quête artistique. Le fondateur et directeur des Cris de Paris a invité Wolfgang Mitterer à recréer à partir des mots de Martin Opitz une œuvre où les rôles semblent surgir de la masse chorale avant d’y replonger, où l’électronique brouille les frontières entre chant et pure vibration matérielle. Aurélien Bory a conçu pour cette métamorphose opératique un espace circulaire, enveloppant et dynamique : aussi secret que les anneaux d’un arbre, aussi vaste et profond que les sphères du cosmos antique.
