Men and women from the people

Heads rolling, blind anger and bloodshed define the brutal dynamics of Robespierre's reign of terror in 1794. While Robespierre poses as the guardian of virtue and true revolutionary values, his former comrade-in-arms, once radical agitator of the French Revolution, Georg Danton , deeply disillusioned. Distrust, agitation and intrigues finally lead him and his confidants before the revolutionary tribunal. With a prophecy of the dictatorship, the brilliant rhetorician Danton initially seems to be able to win the angry people over to his side, but shortly thereafter, to the cheers and jeers of the masses, he experiences Égalité under the guillotine together with the other convicts. 

In his first drama, the twenty-year-old Georg Büchner, who was himself fascinated by revolutionary ideas, took up the story of Georges Danton (1759-1794) and, with Danton's death in 1835, created a portrait of a disillusioned revolutionary. During the Second World War, the Austrian composer Gottfried von Einem (1918-1996) began work on his first opera of the same name. He created the libretto for Danton's death together with his composition teacher and friend Boris Blacher from Büchner's drama and selected letters. The premiere at the Salzburg Festival in 1947 was von Einem's personal reckoning with the recent past and became a great success. Danton's deathputs the people in the center of attention in impressive choral scenes and tells of bloodlust, spirals of violence and the seductiveness of the masses.

Köpfe rollen, blinde Wut und Blutvergießen bestimmen die brutale Dynamik der von Robespierre errichteten Schreckensherrschaft im Jahr 1794. Während Robespierre sich als Hüter der Tugend und der wahren revolutionären Werte aufspielt, ist sein ehemaliger Mitstreiter, der einst so radikale Agitator der Französischen Revolution, Georg Danton, zutiefst ernüchtert. Misstrauen, Hetze und Intrigen führen ihn und seine Vertrauten schließlich vor das Revolutionstribunal. Mit einer Prophetie der Diktatur scheint der brillante Rhetoriker Danton das aufgebrachte Volk zwar zunächst auf seine Seite ziehen zu können, doch schon kurz darauf erfährt er unter Jubel und Hohn der Massen gemeinsam mit den anderen Verurteilten die Égalité unter der Guillotine. 

In seinem ersten Drama griff der erst zwanzigjährige, selbst von revolutionären Ideen faszinierte Georg Büchner die Geschichte Georges Dantons (1759-1794) auf und schuf 1835 mit Dantons Tod das Portrait eines desillusionierten Revolutionärs. Noch während des Zweiten Weltkriegs begann der österreichische Komponist Gottfried von Einem (1918-1996) die Arbeit an seiner gleichnamigen ersten Oper. Das Libretto zu Dantons Tod erstellte er zusammen mit seinem Kompositionslehrer und Freund Boris Blacher aus Büchners Drama und ausgewählten Briefen. Die Uraufführung bei den Salzburger Festspielen im Jahr 1947 war von Einems persönliche Abrechnung mit der jüngsten Vergangenheit und wurde zum großen Erfolg. Dantons Tod rückt in eindrucksvollen Chorszenen das Volk als Akteur in den Mittelpunkt und erzählt von Blutrausch, Gewaltspiralen und der Verführbarkeit der Massen.
