The country of the smile is one of the most defining pieces of Ferenc Lehár's career, a summary of his oeuvre, which he considered to be his best work. The three-act operetta, composed with the sophistication of opera, was performed in 1929.  His musical character and history are inspired by the then fashionable oriental motifs: the love of the aristocratic daughter of Vienna, Liza, and the Chinese heir to the throne, Prince Su Chong. Although there is no shortage of humor and playfulness as usual from the genre, The Land of Smiles revolves around the serious issues of irreconcilable worldview differences, cultural and social differences, and is the first operetta in the world that does not end in a hilarious ending.

In keeping with the international theme, a world-famous British artist has undertaken to organize the work: Stephen Medcalf will read  The Land of Smiles in Budapest again .
