The writer Gustav von Aschenbach is in a deep creative crisis. Seduced by a mysterious stranger, he embarks on a journey and meets the graceful boy Tadzio against the beguiling backdrop of a nebulous Venice. Aschenbach was soon torn between an inspiring fascination for life and beauty, desire, obsession, intoxication and the dissolution of boundaries. After all, he doesn't want to admit that death is waiting for him in the sewers...
In his late masterpiece, Britten congenially managed to process the philosophical discourses of Thomas Mann's original. At the same time, his music conjures up the iridescent world of the lagoon city, in which a multifaceted baritone finds just as much space as a divine countertenor. Britten conceived the character of Tadzio as a dancer and thus transported him in a sophisticated way into a sphere that the protagonist could not reach. With sometimes such unusual stylistic devices as Indonesian gamelan music, the impressionistically dazzling opera composition - atmospheric, emotional and of great beauty - reflects both the inner world of the failing artist and the fascinating cosmos of the longed-for Venice.
