Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz, with its folktale-like plot, scenes in the dark forest and in the realm of spirits, became a symbol of German Romanticism shortly after its premiere and has been considered the »first German national opera« ever since. Accompanied by a consistently lush, highly romantic orchestral sound, the young huntsman Max fights for his love for the forester's daughter Agathe, but has to deal with the devil. After his impressive version of "Fidelio" last season, René Jacobs is dusting off Weber's great opera hit this time - and together with the brilliant Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, he is making a fitting contribution to the Hamburg International Music Festival, which this season is dedicated to the motto "Nature".
