With the rediscovery of Johann Sebastian Bach's "St Matthew Passion", a masterpiece of music history disappeared for a good 200 years. Carl Heinrichs Graun's passion oratorio "The Death of Jesus" impressively reflects the transition from the Baroque period to the early Classic period. The "Royal Prussian Capellmeister" Graun set a text by the poet Karl Wilhelm Ramler, who created the texts on behalf of Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia, to music. In Ramler's text and Graun's music, the passion story is interpreted with comments and emotional highlights and aspects of Christ's suffering are presented. The work was considered by contemporaries to be a "sentimental lyrical oratorio".

Mit der Wiederentdeckung von Johann Sebastian Bachs „Matthäus-Passion“ verschwindet für gut 200 Jahre ein Meisterwerk der Musikgeschichte. Carl Heinrichs Grauns Passionsoratorium „Der Tod Jesu“ spiegelt in eindrucksvoller Art und Weise den Übergang der Barockzeit zur Frühklassik wieder. Der „Königlich Preußische Capellmeister“ Graun vertonte einen Text des Dichters Karl Wilhelm Ramler, der im Auftrag der Prinzessin Anna Amalia von Preußen die Texte schuf. In Ramlers Text und Grauns Musik wird die Passionsgeschichte kommentierend interpretiert und es werden emotionale Höhepunkte und Aspekte des Leidens Christi präsentiert. So galt das Werk bei den Zeitgenossen als „empfindungsvolles lyrisches Oratorium“.
