An evening of two one-act operas

The second of the three authors of the dramaturgical series of the Terezín Composers' Opera is Viktor Ullmann, a native of Těšín. Two one-act operas, which he composed during the war years in a short period of time, will be performed on the NDM stage for the first time. While The Broken Jug - a satirical story of a seemingly absurd trial - was completed just before the author's deportation to the Terezin ghetto, the Emperor of Atlantis became infamous precisely because of its gloomy place of birth. Although its planned premiere in Terezín did not take place and the work was performed for the first time more than thirty years later, it immediately and unmistakably demonstrated the timelessness of its content. The broken jug and the Emperor of Atlantisconnects the unifying theme of the human desire for power and its abuse for one's own benefit. Viktor Ullmann was able to portray this age-old ailment of the human character with universal validity, and it is precisely thanks to this attribute of eternal relevance that the Emperor of Atlantis is currently one of the sought-after and often cited titles abroad.

Večer dvou jednoaktových oper

Druhým ze tří autorů dramaturgické řady Opery terezínských skladatelů je těšínský rodák Viktor Ullmann. Dvě jednoaktové opery, které zkomponoval během válečných let v krátkém časovém rozestupu, zazní na scéně NDM poprvé. Zatímco Rozbitý džbán – satirický příběh zdánlivě absurdního soudního procesu – byl dopsán těsně před autorovou deportací do terezínského ghetta, Císař Atlantidy neslavně proslul právě svým ponurým místem zrodu. Přestože k jeho připravované terezínské premiéře nedošlo a dílo bylo prvně uvedeno až s odstupem více než třiceti let, okamžitě a neomylně prokázalo nadčasovost svého obsahu. Rozbitý džbán i Císaře Atlantidy propojuje jednotící námět lidské touhy po moci a jejím zneužívání ve vlastní prospěch. Viktor Ullmann dokázal tento odvěký neduh lidského charakteru ztvárnit s univerzální platností, a právě díky tomuto atributu věčné aktuálnosti patří Císař Atlantidy v současnosti v zahraničí k vyhledávaným a často uváděným titulům.
