Virgile raconte qu’Enée, chassé de Troie en flammes, parvient à la cour de Didon, reine de Carthage. Après une idylle passionnée, Énée obéit à l’ordre de Jupiter qui le somme de lever l’ancre. Le prince troyen abandonne l’infortunée souveraine qui meurt de désespoir. Dans le livret de Tate, c’est une magicienne qui, sous l’apparence de Mercure, ordonne au héros de quitter Didon et Carthage et de partir à la conquête de l’Italie. Dans le fameux air où Didon dira adieu à la vie : « When I am laid in earth… Remember me, but ah! forget my fate » (« Quand je serai portée en terre… Souviens-toi de moi, mais ah ! Oublie mon destin »), l’un des grands moments de l’opéra, Purcell nous donne un chef-d’œuvre bouleversant de densité émotionnelle. Mais en héritier du théâtre élisabéthain, il excelle aussi à mêler le comique au tragique : les danses insouciantes des marins, les clameurs diaboliques des sorcières n’en font que ressortir par contraste la tragédie de Didon.

Virgil tells us that Aeneas, driven out of burning Troy, arrives at the court of Dido, Queen of Carthage. After a passionate romance, Aeneas obeys Jupiter’s order to weigh anchor. The Trojan prince abandons the unfortunate queen, who dies of desper-ation. In Tate’s libretto, it is a sorceress who, under the guise of Mercury, orders the hero to leave Dido and Carthage and conquer Italy. In the famous aria in which Dido says goodbye to life : « When I am laid in earth… Remember me, but ah ! forget my fate », one of the great moments of the opera, Purcell provides a masterpiece of overwhelming emotional density. But as an heir to the Elizabethan theatre, Purcell also excels in combining the comic with the tragic: by contrast, the carefree dances of the sailors and the diabolical clamour of the witches only serve to highlight Dido’s tragedy.
