In this entertaining comic operetta, Hanna Glawari, the ‘merry widow’ of the title, fights to keep her inheritance. The state meanwhile is determined that the fortune remain in Pontevedra and schemes to marry her off accordingly to Count Danilo. Hanna and Danilo pursue and repel one another in the game of courtship, in a plot which aims to both amuse audiences and reflect the gigantic and hilarious flaws in human nature. Lehár’s operetta is defined by quick, galloping pieces and a lighthearted, romantic tale both satirical and frivolous. The opera is directed by the esteemed Marco Arturo Marelli and performed by Orchestra and Chorus from Volksoper Wien. A pre-performance talk for ticket holders only, will be held one hour prior to each performance.
