The king and queen are old and the prince is still without a bride. Then a girl appears and claims to be a princess. The prince falls in love immediately - but what if the stranger isn't a princess at all? It has to be put to the test, and what better way to do it than to put a pea between the mattresses of your bed? A real princess would feel that. And indeed: the princess cannot fall asleep and gets so angry that she yells at the whole court. Happy about her proven origin, she is welcomed by the Queen. The opera ends with a hymn: "Long live the princess, praised her behind!"
With her astute musical wit, Toch's "The Princess and the Pea" is not only one of the most interesting fairy tale operas of the 20th century, but is still a demanding pleasure for young and old to this day.

König und Königin sind schon alt und der Prinz noch immer ohne Braut. Da taucht ein Mädchen auf und behauptet, eine Prinzessin zu sein. Der Prinz verliebt sich sofort – doch wenn die Fremde gar keine Prinzessin ist? Man muss sie auf die Probe stellen, und wie ginge dies besser, als eine Erbse zwischen die Matratzen ihres Bettes zu legen? Eine echte Prinzessin würde das spüren. Und tatsächlich: Die Prinzessin kann nicht einschlafen und wird so wütend, dass sie den ganzen Hofstaat zusammenbrüllt. Glücklich über die bewiesene Herkunft wird sie von der Königin aufgenommen. Die Oper endet mit einer Hymne: »Es lebe die Prinzessin, ihr Hinten sei gepriesen!«
Mit ihrem scharfsinnigen musikalischen Witz zählt Tochs »Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse« nicht nur zu den interessantesten Märchenopern des 20. Jahrhunderts, sondern ist bis heute ein anspruchsvolles Vergnügen für Jung und Alt.
