"A flute like that is worth more than gold and crowns." There is Tamino - a prince - on the run from a monster. Three women save his life. Even more, they show him the image of Paminas - daughter of the star-flaming Queen of the Night. Tamino immediately falls in love with the princess who has to be freed from the clutches of Sarastro, the queen's opponent. And then there is Papageno - bird dealer in the service of the queen. At his side and with the magic flute and glockenspiel in his luggage, Tamino embarks on a test trip to win over Pamina. Three boys accompany the two. It quickly becomes clear that it is not clear who is good and who is evil before strength prevails in the end. "As a reward, she crowns beauty and wisdom with an eternal crown!" "The Magic Flute" was created for a simple Viennese suburban stage, the Freihaustheater auf der Wieden, which Emanuel Schikaneder took over in 1789. Schikaneder's textbook draws on a wide variety of sources: from Freemasonry influences and Egyptian motifs to Christoph Martin Wieland's collection of fairy tales "Dschinnistan oder aushlene Feen- und Geistergeschichten" (Dschinnistan or Exquisite Fairy Tales and Ghost Stories). The only loosely woven plot thread threatens to tear more than once. In view of the numerous dramaturgical inconsistencies, the Austrian statesman and chronicler Karl Graf von Zinzendorf even spoke of an "incredible farce" at the premiere in September 1791. Of course, this did not detract in any way from the triumphal procession of the “Magic Flute”, which continues to this day. It is and remains one of the most popular and most frequently performed works in operatic literature.
