DOLCEAMARO – THE TRIUMPH OF THE SENSES
The 2023 edition of DolceAmaro is on stage, the usual semi-staged symphonic lyric appointment dedicated to the students of the masterclass for opera singers of the Teatro Comunale at the end of a course led by world-renowned teachers, such as Leone Magiera, Mariella Devia, Barbara Frittoli, Ernesto Palacio and Michele Pertusi. The show combines the skills of two advanced training courses held by the Teatro Comunale of Modena with the support of the European Social Fund and the Emilia-Romagna Region. In fact, the performance will also be seen in live streaming on the Teatro Comunale YouTube channel in a broadcast created, as a final experience, by the students of the video communication course born from the collaboration with Edunova/University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
An opera singer, when he takes the stage, must know how to listen to what the opera demands, put himself in a dialectical relationship with his own body and voice, and offer the audience the answers that musical theater is able to give to the questions of the contemporary world.
This so revealing stage action can only take place if the performer frees the body from the frills and, with profound self-awareness, dialogues with the musical dramaturgy: the voice then merges with the action and the physical language becomes an astonishing metaphor of musical language.
This year's work of the DolceAmaro project has been directed in this direction: a journey into human relationships, an investigation of the senses, an encounter/clash between male and female in the eternal struggle between reason and feeling. A varied itinerary that unfolds along the great operatic repertoire, from the lightness (which is not superficiality) of the comic opera, up to the great twentieth-century lyricism in search of a renewed humanity.
The human being is therefore the focus of each of the works represented here, outlined in its most intimate folds, from the all-female ability to love and hate at the same time, to transcendence towards the ideal, from magical mysticism rooted in the most ancient traditions, to plots of deception, disguises and subterfuges typical of the funniest characters.
If the work remains current and contemporary, it means that it is capable of outlining the events of the human being with lucidity and transversality: then it is worth trying to tell it without frills and superstructures, trying to mirror oneself in it without fear, without horror vacui , assisting to the miracle of relationship, elaboration and artistic creation, starting from an analytical and poetic work on musical dramaturgy and having the body as its sole object.

The body of the performers as a metaphor for life, relationships and the soul, exalted "squared" by virtual scenographies created, following the fil rougedramaturgical exploration of the five senses, by the participants in the video communication course, in a synergistic and passionate joint work session, which was the result of a long reflection on the contemporary staging of opera between directors and performers.
